Peace of Mind Does Not Require a Quiet Mind

A noisy mind can make peace seem like a future achievement.

When the thoughts stop, I will be at peace.

When worry disappears, the mind will finally be under control.

The difficulty is that thought is active by nature.

Memory appears.

Plans arise.

Judgments form.

Associations arrive before we invite them.

Peace of mind may therefore depend less on eliminating mental activity than on changing our relationship to it.

A thought can be present without becoming an instruction.

A worry can be noticed without becoming a prophecy.

An interpretation can arise without being treated as the only possible description of reality.

This is not a claim that serious anxiety or intrusive thoughts require no treatment. Mental-health conditions deserve appropriate care.

The narrower distinction is experiential.

The mind can remain active while we become less compelled to follow every movement it makes.

Peace is not always the silence of thought.

Sometimes it is the absence of the requirement that thought first become silent.
