Beyond what we know and what we know we do not know is a third domain: what we do not know we do not know—the realm of blind spots and breakthroughs.

World of Knowing

There is what we know, and there is what we know we have not yet learned. Both are visible enough to work with. We can use what we know and seek out what we know is missing.

A third domain is harder to approach: what we do not know we do not know. A blind spot cannot be corrected simply by trying harder to see from the same position. We may need another person's observation, a new question, or an experience that unsettles our assumptions.

This unknown is a source of risk and possibility. Discovering what was outside our frame can expose an error, but it can also open a line of thought we could not have planned from what we already knew.
