What Does Being Right Cost Here?

Sometimes being right matters.

Facts matter.

Safety can depend on accuracy.

A false claim does not become harmless because someone values harmony.

The problem is not correctness.

It is what happens when winning the point becomes the purpose of the conversation.

Then listening narrows.

Questions become traps.

Correction becomes status.

The relationship becomes the arena in which the victory is displayed.

A useful question is not Would I rather be right or happy?

The choice is too simple.

A better question is: what does pursuing rightness in this way cost here?

Does it improve the decision?

Protect someone from harm?

Clarify the record?

Or does it mainly preserve an identity as the person who knows?

Correctness can serve a conversation.

It can also consume one.

The difference becomes visible in what the conversation is for.
