What a Promise Makes Us Answerable For

Predictions and promises both speak about the future. They do different work. A prediction says what we think will happen. A promise says what we are committing ourselves to do.

The future may still refuse to cooperate. A flight can be canceled. Illness can intervene. A dependency can fail. Other people can change their minds. A promise is therefore not a guarantee that an outcome will occur.

Its force lies in the commitment it creates for the speaker. A promise organizes preparation, attention, communication, and accountability before the result is known.

If circumstances make performance impossible, the promise still gives us something to do: communicate, renegotiate, and address the impact of the change. That is part of being answerable for our word.

Prediction belongs to expectation. Promise belongs to commitment. Confusing them makes promises sound either magical or naïve. A promise does not forecast the future. It changes what the speaker is now answerable for.
