Independence Can Be a Success That Feels Like Loss

Some successes do not feel entirely like success.

Parenting contains one of the clearest examples.

A child becomes capable of thinking independently, making decisions, building relationships, choosing work, making mistakes, and living beyond the parent's supervision.

That independence is often part of what parenting was trying to make possible.

It can still feel like loss.

The person calls less.

Needs less.

Disagrees more confidently.

Builds a life whose center is elsewhere.

Nothing has necessarily gone wrong.

The relationship has changed because dependence has changed.

The paradox is worth naming.

Closeness cannot be preserved by preventing independence without changing the very thing that made the closeness parental in the first place.

Adult relationship asks for another form.

Less management.

More respect for difference.

More room for the other person's own mind.

Success can be bittersweet when what we helped create is a person capable of moving farther from us.

The feeling of loss does not cancel the success.
