A Promise Is Not a Prediction

A promise sounds like a statement about the future.

I will do this.

It can therefore be mistaken for a prediction.

But prediction and promise perform different acts.

A prediction says what we think will happen.

A promise says what we are committing ourselves to do.

The promised result may still be uncertain.

Weather can intervene.

Other people can refuse.

Capacity can change.

Unexpected events can make the original promise impossible or inappropriate.

None of that makes promising meaningless.

It makes communication and integrity part of the promise.

The commitment organizes preparation, attention, coordination, and accountability before the outcome exists.

If circumstances change, the promise can be renegotiated or cleaned up.

A promise therefore does not guarantee the future.

It changes the present by creating a standard against which future action can be addressed.

Prediction tries to describe what will happen.

Promise creates something we are answerable for.
