Understanding Becomes Yours When You Can Recreate It

A sentence can be understood before it has become ours.

We can repeat the definition.

We can summarize the argument.

We can recognize the vocabulary.

That is genuine learning.

There is another level.

Can we recreate what the words are pointing to in our own experience?

This matters whenever material is meant to change observation rather than merely add information.

A description of listening is not the act of listening.

A definition of a blind spot does not reveal one.

Knowing that interpretation differs from fact is not the same as catching an interpretation while it is masquerading as fact.

Recreation means being able to find the distinction again without depending entirely on the original speaker's language.

We can test it.

We can show it in another example.

We can notice where it does not apply.

We can explain it without turning the explanation into a substitute for seeing.

Understanding is valuable.

It becomes more robust when the learner can regenerate what made the material worth understanding in the first place.
