Steadiness Is Not Harshness

Some conversations ask us to stay clear when another person would rather change the subject. We can soften a question until it says nothing, or become so forceful that the person can no longer hear us.

There is another way to remain steady. We can say what we see, make the reason for our concern plain, and listen to the answer without treating every objection as an excuse. The point is not to win control of the exchange.

Compassion does not require us to abandon a boundary or pretend a commitment has been met. Firmness does not give us permission to humiliate, threaten, or disregard someone's limits. Both qualities are tested by how we respond when the conversation resists our preferred direction.

A steady presence leaves the issue visible and the other person fully human. That can make a difficult truth easier to face, even when agreement never comes.
