Many of us learned to divide the day into work, which must be serious, and play, which begins when work is over. That division can make curiosity feel like an interruption even when it would help us do the task well.
Playfulness can enter the work itself. We can try a different arrangement, ask an unexpected question, or notice a possibility we would miss while only watching the clock. The task still has a purpose and people may still rely on our result.
This does not mean every job is enjoyable or that play can replace pay, rest, and fair conditions. It means the manner in which we engage is not fixed by the label on the activity. Some demanding work can include experiment and delight; some supposed leisure feels like another obligation.
The question is where a little more room to explore would improve our attention, not where we can pretend the effort has vanished.
