Not Knowing What to Do Is Still a Place to Begin

When we do not know what to do, the first impulse is often to escape the feeling. We collect advice, make lists, and try to appear decisive before we have understood the situation.

Sometimes advice is needed immediately. A safety concern, deadline, or obligation may not allow much pause. In less urgent moments, we can admit the simpler fact: I do not know yet. That is information about where the inquiry stands, not a verdict on our ability.

From there we can ask a more useful question. What is uncertain? Which facts are missing? Who is affected? What small step could teach us something without pretending to settle the whole future?

Not knowing is uncomfortable. It can also be the first honest place from which to look. We may find an action there; we need not manufacture certainty before we begin.
