Letting Go of a Meaning Can Reveal What the Meaning Was Doing

Meaning is powerful because it organizes attention.

A job becomes proof of worth.

A relationship becomes evidence of success.

A mistake becomes a verdict.

A life event becomes a sign that everything is going well or badly.

The event and the meaning become difficult to separate.

One way to examine that structure is to loosen the meaning temporarily.

Not because meaning is false.

Not because life is objectively meaningless.

But because stepping back from an interpretation can reveal what the interpretation had been doing.

What changes if the event is allowed to be an event before it becomes evidence for a larger story?

What disappears?

What becomes visible?

What action becomes available when the interpretation is no longer treated as the event itself?

Meaning can be useful.

It can also become invisible once it has organized experience for long enough.

Letting go of a meaning for a moment is not nihilism.

It is a way of seeing the work the meaning had been performing.
