The Ordinary Fact of Birth Can Still Be Astonishing

Familiarity can make extraordinary processes look ordinary.

Birth is one of them.

Human beings arrive through biology that can be described in detail.

Pregnancy, labor, delivery, recovery, and care are not mysterious simply because they are profound to the people living them.

Yet explanation does not remove astonishment.

A new person exists where there was no such person before.

For mothers, birth can involve effort, risk, pain, change, dependence, and forms of care that are easy to romanticize from the outside.

A respectful view holds both levels.

Birth is a biological process.

It can also be experienced as astonishing.

Motherhood is not reducible to biology, and not every mother has the same relationship to giving birth.

The larger point is about familiarity.

The fact that something happens every day does not require us to stop seeing how remarkable it is when it happens here, to this person, in this life.

Ordinary and astonishing can describe the same event from different angles.
