Hope Becomes a Problem When It Postpones Life
Hope can be a source of endurance.
People hope for recovery, peace, safety, reconciliation, justice, opportunity, and change.
There is nothing inherently passive about that.
Hope becomes a problem when it quietly changes the status of the present.
Life now becomes preparation for life later.
I will begin when this changes.
I will permit myself to live when the result arrives.
The future becomes real life and today becomes the waiting room.
That is a different use of hope.
It can coexist with enormous activity while still withholding participation from what is here.
The alternative is not hopelessness in the sense of despair.
It is refusing to make the future responsible for authorizing the present.
We can work for change.
We can prefer another outcome.
We can hope deeply.
And we can still ask what living requires before the hoped-for result arrives.
Hope serves life best when it points forward without evacuating the ground beneath our feet.
