Hope Can Become a Form of Delay

Hope can help people endure uncertainty.

It can keep a future open when the present is difficult.

It can also become a form of delay.

Life will begin when this changes.

I will be available when the problem is solved.

I will allow myself to live when the future becomes better than today.

That use of hope quietly makes the present a waiting room.

The problem is not hope itself.

It is assigning the future exclusive authority over whether the present counts.

Some conditions genuinely should change.

We can work for relief, justice, recovery, opportunity, or a different result.

Doing so does not require treating today as merely the defective version of tomorrow.

A hoped-for future, if it arrives, will immediately become another present.

So the capacity to meet what is here cannot be postponed forever.

Hope is useful when it opens possibility.

It becomes costly when it keeps telling us that living starts later.
