Befriend an Emotion Before Trying to Remove It
Unwanted emotions quickly become problems.
Stop being angry.
Get over the sadness.
Calm down.
Do not be jealous.
The emotion is now fighting for space against our wish that it disappear.
Another move is possible before regulation or action begins.
Befriend the emotion long enough to understand what is happening.
Where is it felt?
What event or interpretation is it responding to?
What does it seem to protect?
What action does it urge?
Curiosity does not mean every emotion is accurate.
Fear can misread danger.
Anger can exaggerate blame.
Shame can make a temporary failure look like identity.
Nor does befriending emotion mean remaining inside overwhelming distress without support.
Clinical care may be needed.
The distinction is sequence.
Before trying to remove the feeling, let it become information.
An emotion that has been heard may still need regulation.
It no longer has to be treated only as an intruder.
