Be at Home in Your Experience Before You Change It

An uncomfortable feeling arrives and the repair plan begins immediately. Distract yourself. Explain it. Improve your circumstances. Become a better version of the person having the feeling. Some of those actions may help. The speed of the impulse can keep us from knowing what we are trying to change.

To be at home in an experience is to spend a moment with it as it is. Where does it show up? What thought travels with it? What has actually happened? We need not approve of the feeling, and we need not promise to keep it.

The pause can reveal whether the next step is rest, a conversation, a boundary, practical help, or no action yet. Without the pause, we may apply the same solution to every discomfort simply because changing something feels safer than meeting what is here.

This is a small practice, not a rule against change. Pain, danger, and injustice can require prompt response. A person in serious distress should be able to seek care. The invitation is for moments when the reflex to fix has taken over before we have listened.

We can be at home long enough to see clearly, then move. The action may be more precise because we are no longer trying to escape the experience while we decide what to do.
