A Hopeful Story Should Not Replace What Is
Human beings live inside stories.
Things will work out.
The right person will arrive.
The hard chapter will make sense later.
Hopeful stories can help people endure uncertainty.
They can also compete with reality.
When the expected ending becomes more authoritative than what is actually happening, information gets edited to protect the story.
Warning signs are minimized.
Loss is postponed.
An ending is treated as temporary because the narrative says reunion belongs at the end.
The alternative is not cynicism.
A hopeful story can remain a possibility.
It should not be promoted into a fact merely because we need it to be true.
What is happening?
What do I hope will happen?
What action is justified by the difference between those two?
Hope can accompany reality.
It becomes dangerous when it replaces reality.
