What Changes When Ego Is Treated as an Activity?

Ego is often spoken about as though it were a thing a person possesses.

Werner Erhard offered a different formulation: ego as the functioning of a point of view in the attempt to perpetuate that point of view.

The value of the distinction is grammatical as much as philosophical.

If ego is something we have, the problem seems to be an object inside us.

If ego is an activity, we can look for what the activity actually does.

A viewpoint selects evidence.

It defends its interpretation.

It explains away contradiction.

It recruits new events into an existing story about self and world.

None of this means every point of view is wrong.

We need perspectives in order to navigate experience.

The inquiry begins when preserving the viewpoint becomes more important than seeing what is actually happening.

Treating ego as an activity makes it observable.

What am I doing right now to keep this particular version of myself or the situation intact?

An activity can be noticed in a way an invisible inner object cannot.
