The Power of Language
Language helps us describe experience, make commitments, ask questions, and imagine what could happen next. The words we choose can change what we notice and which actions seem available.
That influence is real, but it is not complete control. Circumstances, bodies, other people, and material limits also shape what we experience and can do. A change of wording cannot, by itself, change every outcome.
Still, a sentence can close an inquiry or open one. “This always happens” directs attention differently from “What happened this time?” A promise organizes action differently from a wish.
Language is one way we participate in shaping our response. Its power is clearest when we use it with attention to the world it is describing, rather than expecting words alone to do the work.
