A name.
A role.
A history.
A nationality.
A belief.
A relationship.
A description of personality.
All of those can be true and important.
A philosophical inquiry begins when we notice that they are also things we can become aware of.
If I can notice a belief, the belief is present in awareness.
If I can notice a role, the role is present in awareness.
That does not prove that awareness is a separate substance, an infinite self, or something larger than the universe.
Those are metaphysical conclusions, not observations forced by the experience.
The modest distinction is enough.
The contents of identity and the awareness in which those contents are noticed are not obviously the same description.
That gap can be explored without deciding what awareness ultimately is.
Names and stories tell us a great deal about a person.
They may not exhaust the inquiry into what it is to be aware of having them.
