Friendship With Adult Children Cannot Be Claimed by Role

A child becoming an adult changes more than the child's age.

It changes what a parent can legitimately claim.

Parenthood remains part of the history.

Authority does not remain in the same form.

Friendship can emerge, but it cannot be demanded as payment for having been a parent.

That distinction protects both sides.

An adult child may want closeness.

They may want distance.

They may move between the two.

Respect means allowing the adult relationship to develop without forcing it back into the hierarchy that once organized childhood.

Friendship also asks something different of the parent.

Mutuality.

Curiosity.

Boundaries.

A willingness to be known as a person rather than only as the senior role.

The old relationship does not disappear.

A new one can grow alongside it.

Parenthood is given by history.

Friendship with an adult child is something both people have to keep choosing.
