Not Complaining Is Not the Same as Not Hurting

Pain and complaint are not the same thing.

A person can hurt without talking about it.

A person can talk about pain because useful communication is needed.

A clinician may need an accurate report.

A family member may need to know what has changed.

A workplace may need to understand a limitation.

Silence is not evidence of health.

At the same time, repeatedly circling the same discomfort in thought and conversation can become a second layer of experience.

The distinction is not moral.

Complaining does not make someone weak, and choosing not to dwell on pain does not make someone superior.

It is a question of function.

Is this communication helping us respond to the pain?

Or has the pain become the center around which attention now has to orbit?

The body may still need diagnosis, treatment, rest, rehabilitation, medication, or accommodation.

None of that disappears because we change how much commentary surrounds the discomfort.

Not complaining is not the same as not hurting.

What can change is how much additional life the pain is asked to organize.
