Making an Ex Wrong Can Keep the Ending Alive

An unwanted breakup can leave us looking for a reason that will make the ending easier to bear. One available strategy is to build a case against the person who left. Remember every irritating habit, rehearse every disappointment, and conclude that we are better off.

That case may offer relief for an evening. It may also keep the relationship active in our attention. To keep proving the other person wrong, we have to keep returning to them. The argument becomes another way of staying connected to an ending we cannot reverse.

This does not mean the relationship was healthy, or that real harm should be overlooked. Clear boundaries and an honest account of what happened can be essential. The distinction is between naming harm to protect ourselves and collecting faults to make the loss disappear.

Letting go does not require praising the other person. It may mean allowing the relationship to have contained good and difficult parts without needing a verdict that cancels our grief. Someone can choose to leave; we can dislike that choice; and the ending can still be real.

The work is often slower than a list of reasons. We can acknowledge what we wanted, what we did not get, and what is no longer available. When we stop needing the other person to be wrong in order to move forward, the ending may finally have room to be an ending.
