Fear Can Come Along With Action

We sometimes make a private bargain with fear: once it disappears, we will speak, begin, or decide. The bargain can leave us waiting even after we have thought carefully about what matters.

Fear is information about our experience, but it is not a complete assessment of the situation. Sometimes it points to a real hazard that calls for more preparation or a different choice. Sometimes it accompanies a necessary conversation or a meaningful step into unfamiliar ground.

The work is to tell those cases apart. We can check the facts, seek help, set limits, and still admit that we are afraid. If the action remains worth taking, fear need not be removed before we move.

Courage is not a performance of calm. It can be the quieter decision to carry a feeling with us while taking the next responsible step.
