Catch the Meaning Before It Hardens

Meaning arrives quickly.

Something happens, and almost immediately the event is accompanied by an interpretation.

A delayed reply becomes rejection. A mistake becomes proof of incompetence. An unexpected expense becomes evidence that everything is going wrong.

The interpretation may be reasonable. It may even turn out to be accurate.

It is still an interpretation.

The useful skill is not trying to stop meaning from being made. Human perception and thought organize events constantly.

The skill is catching the addition early enough to see it as an addition.

What happened?

What have I concluded that it means?

What further conclusions are now following from that first one?

This is different from denying emotion or stripping experience down to sterile facts.

Meaning matters. Stories matter. Interpretation is part of how we navigate life.

But once an interpretation hardens into the event itself, alternatives become difficult to see.

Mastery here is modest.

Not no meaning.

Not perfect objectivity.

Just the growing ability to notice: this part happened, and this part is what I am making of it.

Sometimes that small separation is enough to reopen the situation.
