At Stake

What is at stake is the concern or commitment that gives a situation its weight. It is why a stand matters beyond the words used to announce it.

When we can name what is at stake, urgency becomes more intelligible. We can ask what we are trying to protect, honor, or make possible, and whether our actions serve that concern.

The question is useful in disagreement too. Two people may argue about a decision while caring about different things within it. Seeing those concerns does not settle the decision, but it makes the conversation more exact.
