Acceptance Can Leave Room for Change
Being accepted can be a relief. We do not have to defend every part of ourselves before we are allowed into the conversation. That gift matters in its own right.
Acceptance can be mistaken for an agreement that nothing may change. It is not. Someone can welcome us as we are and still notice a pattern that limits us, ask a difficult question, or tell us when our actions have an impact.
The invitation works only if it leaves choice with the person being addressed. Otherwise 'I see your possibility' can become another way of demanding that they fit our preferred version of them.
We need not choose between being received and being able to grow. At its best, acceptance gives us enough room to see ourselves clearly and decide what comes next.
