A Relationship Needs Room for the Rest of Life

A close relationship can become the center of attention. Shared plans, affection, and difficulty all ask for time. Sometimes the relationship begins to feel as though it must contain every source of meaning in either person's life.

That is a heavy task to give each other. We also have friendships, work, care for others, solitude, interests, and commitments that shaped us before we met. Keeping room for them need not signal a lack of love.

The practical question is how to speak about priorities together. What needs time? What has been crowded out? Which choices affect the other person? A commitment outside the relationship can be named honestly rather than used as a reason to withdraw without explanation.

Closeness does not require either person to become the other's entire world. A relationship can be important enough to protect and spacious enough for both lives to remain alive.
