A New Future Is Not Just Another Thing to Do

When the future feels thin, the obvious response is to add something to do.

Another project.

Another trip.

Another goal.

Another item to keep the calendar full.

Activity can be valuable.

It is not identical with possibility.

The source essay reaches this distinction through a private coaching encounter about aging and running out of life.

The biography can be removed while the inquiry remains.

A task tells us what to do.

A possibility changes the context in which doing occurs.

Learning a language can be a task.

Living as someone newly available for connection is a possibility that may organize many tasks.

Starting a project can be a task.

Standing for contribution, craft, or service can make the project one expression of a larger future.

This matters when adding tasks no longer feels enlivening.

The problem may not be insufficient activity.

It may be that the activities are no longer organized by a future that matters.

A new future is not necessarily one more thing to do.

It can be what makes several things worth doing.
