A Life You Love Cannot Be Built From Having and Doing Alone

A life can become organized around two questions.

What do I have?

What am I doing?

Both matter.

Housing, health, money, safety, relationships, and material conditions can shape life profoundly.

Work and activity matter too. What we do affects capability, contribution, connection, and future options.

But having and doing do not completely answer another question.

How is this life being lived?

Two people can have similar circumstances and relate to them very differently.

The same person can achieve a long-sought result and discover that the result did not settle the quality of daily experience.

That does not make circumstances irrelevant.

It means they are not the whole architecture of a life we love.

Attention, relationship, values, interpretation, rest, contribution, and the stance from which we act also participate.

A life we love cannot always be purchased by adding one more possession or produced by adding one more task.

Having matters.

Doing matters.

So does the quality of being from which both are lived.
