A Later Relationship Can Reveal an Older One

A present relationship can illuminate an older one without becoming a replacement for it.

A teacher, manager, partner, friend, clinician, or mentor may evoke reactions whose intensity seems larger than the immediate situation.

We want approval.

We fear disappointment.

We interpret correction as rejection.

We expect care in a form the other person never promised to provide.

Sometimes the present relationship is the real problem.

Sometimes it is also revealing an older pattern.

Recognizing the pattern does not make the current person responsible for healing the past.

It gives us more information about what we are bringing into the present.

What expectation is older than this relationship?

What am I asking this person to repair without having said so?

What became visible here that I could not see in the original relationship?

A later relationship can offer another vantage point.

The value is not in turning one person into a substitute for another.

It is in using what becomes visible now to understand what has been traveling with us.
