The Life Between Two Unknowns

We can picture a life between two bookends: the time before we were born and the time after we die. We can ask what either side is like, but an honest answer may be that we do not know.

That uncertainty can be uncomfortable. We may reach for a belief that settles it, or for a confident denial that settles it another way. People hold considered views about these questions. No one needs to borrow certainty they do not have in order to take their life seriously.

The bookends also turn our attention toward the span we can speak from. Who am I while I am here? What relationships and commitments are taking shape in this finite time? The questions do not require a final theory of the self before they can affect a day.

Mortality can sharpen a choice without making every moment urgent. We can rest, laugh, postpone a minor task, or change our minds. Knowing that time has limits may help us distinguish what matters from what merely demands attention.

“I don't know” about the bookends need not empty the middle. It can leave the middle open to inquiry, care, and invention. The life we can examine is the one being lived now.
