Symbols Coordinate Without Containing Reality

Symbols make coordination possible. A number can stand for a quantity, a map for a place, and a title for a responsibility. People can act together because they share enough understanding of what the signs mean.

Money shows this clearly. A note or account balance works within arrangements that let people exchange, save, and pay. It does not literally contain the goods, security, or options it may help us obtain.

The power of a symbol does not make it identical with what it represents. A job title can identify a role without describing the whole person. A metric can track an aspect of performance without capturing all of the work.

Ask what a symbol helps us coordinate and what it leaves out. The symbol can be useful and real in its effects. Remembering its limits keeps that usefulness honest.
