Start From Already OK

Improvement is often built on an accusation.

I am not good enough yet.

Not disciplined enough.

Not successful enough.

Not acceptable enough.

So the work begins as repair of the person doing the work.

There is another starting point: already OK.

That phrase should not be used to deny illness, harm, skill gaps, consequences, or the need for change.

It addresses worth, not competence.

A person can be already worthy of dignity and still need to learn.

Already worthy of care and still need treatment.

Already acceptable as a person and still need to apologize, practice, change behavior, or become more capable.

The actions may look exactly the same from the outside.

The context differs.

When growth begins as proof that we deserve to be OK, every setback becomes evidence against us.

When growth begins without that trial, a setback can remain information.

Already OK is not a reward for finishing the work.

It is one possible place from which the work becomes less entangled with proving that we deserved to begin.
