Skepticism Is Most Useful Before It Becomes a Position

Skepticism is a form of intellectual protection.

It keeps enthusiasm, authority, novelty, and persuasive language from becoming evidence merely because they are compelling.

That is useful.

The trouble begins when skepticism stops being a method and becomes an identity.

Then 'show me' quietly changes into 'nothing you show me will count.'

The difference is not whether we believe a new claim quickly.

We often should not.

It is whether the inquiry remains capable of being updated.

A skeptical person can ask what evidence would change their mind.

They can distinguish a claim from the reputation of the person making it.

They can try something without promising in advance to approve of it.

They can also reject it afterward if the evidence is weak.

None of that requires credulity.

It requires flexibility.

Immediate belief is not intellectual openness.

Neither is automatic disbelief.

Skepticism does its best work while it protects the question.

Once it protects a predetermined answer, it has become another kind of certainty.
