Significance Can Be a Way of Making Our Case Heavier

We do not only add meaning to events.

Sometimes we add weight.

A disagreement becomes an insult.

A mistake becomes a pattern.

A disappointing decision becomes proof of what the other person has always been like.

The added significance can make our position harder to question.

Now disagreeing with our interpretation can sound like minimizing something important.

This is one way significance becomes rhetorical leverage.

It helps us defend, justify, or dramatize our case.

That does not mean the situation is insignificant.

Some events really are serious.

The useful question is whether the seriousness belongs to what happened or has been enlarged by the story we need the event to support.

What happened?

What consequence followed?

What am I adding because I want my conclusion to carry more force?

Seeing the added significance does not require becoming indifferent.

It can make the conversation more accurate.

An event does not need extra weight to deserve an honest response.
