Service Loses Something When It Becomes a Bargain

Service can contain a hidden invoice.

I helped, so you should appreciate me.

I contributed, so I should be recognized.

I gave my time, so something should come back.

The action may still be useful.

Its structure has changed.

Contribution has become a transaction that was never fully declared.

There is nothing wrong with exchange.

Paid work, negotiated reciprocity, and explicit agreements are legitimate.

The difficulty is calling something service while quietly depending on an unspoken return.

Service becomes cleaner when the reason for serving is contained in the serving itself.

The meal is prepared because someone needs to eat.

The room is made ready because people need to use it.

The work is done because the contribution matters.

Gratitude may come.

Recognition may come.

They do not have to be the hidden condition that makes the service worthwhile.
