Ordinary Is Miraculous

Familiarity is good at hiding what is remarkable.

We speak, distinguish, remember, imagine, coordinate, create, repair, teach, learn, and make commitments every day.

Because these capacities are ordinary, they rarely feel extraordinary.

That is the paradox.

The things that make human life remarkable are often the things we notice least because we are surrounded by them.

Language is one example.

We use it so continuously that we can forget what it allows: a promise can organize a future, a question can reveal something previously unseen, and a shared description can coordinate people who are not in the same place.

Attention works the same way.

We can notice that our interpretation is an interpretation.

We can revise a plan.

We can learn from a mistake rather than merely repeat it.

None of this requires claiming that humans are uniquely miraculous among living things or that other species lack complex capacities.

The claim can remain smaller.

What is commonplace in human life is often astonishing when it is examined closely.

Ordinary does not mean trivial.

Sometimes it means the remarkable has become so familiar that we have stopped looking.
