But a reason can become a gatekeeper. We wait for an outcome important enough to justify a page, a sketch, a conversation, or a new way to spend an afternoon. The possibility of making something then has to defend itself before it begins.
Creating without a required payoff is different from neglecting what matters. It is a chance to let a small idea take form before we know what it is for. We may keep it, change it, or let it go.
The work does not have to prove its value in advance. Sometimes making is the way we discover what was possible to make.
