Language as an Access to Power

Language does more than report what has already happened. A promise, request, agreement, or invitation can change what people are now able to do together.

Words do not create every fact they describe, and saying something does not make it so. Their power lies in what speaking and listening can organize: a shared commitment, a new question, or an action that was not available in the same way before.
