We can learn a great deal about integrity by spending time with someone whose word is dependable. We see how they make commitments, how they decline what they cannot do, and how they respond when a promise is at risk.
That example is a beginning. Copying a reliable person may help, but it cannot make our decisions for us. The practice becomes ours when we notice what our own words have set in motion and take care of their effects.
Each commitment gives us feedback. Did we speak clearly? Did we leave room for what we could not control? When we failed, did we tell the people affected and work to repair what we could? Integrity deepens through those ordinary acts, especially when no admired teacher is watching.
