Innovation Often Comes From Convergence

Innovation is often narrated as a single breakthrough.

One inventor.

One dramatic idea.

One moment when the future arrives.

Many technologies develop differently.

Existing capabilities become small enough, cheap enough, reliable enough, connected enough, or compatible enough to be combined in a new way.

A drone, for example, depends on earlier developments in flight control, sensors, cameras, radio communication, batteries, computing, and miniaturization.

No single component has to be unprecedented for the combination to feel new.

The distinction matters because it changes how we look for possibility.

We do not have to wait for an entirely new ingredient.

Sometimes the opportunity is already distributed across technologies, skills, or institutions that have not yet been assembled together.

Innovation can be invention.

It can also be convergence.
