If I Could Live Again, I Would Add Less Significance

If you could live your life a second time and change only one thing, what would you choose? The question usually draws us toward a different decision, relationship, or opportunity. Imagine instead changing how much significance you add to what happens.

A delayed answer might remain a delayed answer rather than proof that you are unwanted. A mistake might call for correction without becoming a statement about your whole character. A pleasant afternoon could be enjoyed without needing it to stand for a perfect life.

This does not mean that events lack consequences or that people should become indifferent. Losses matter. Promises matter. Some choices alter lives. The inquiry is about the extra weight we sometimes put on top: the explanation that an event must reveal a final truth about us or the world.

Hindsight makes that weight easier to see. We can remember how certain we were about the meaning of a moment, then notice that life carried on in ways the meaning did not predict. A second life might contain the same events and less confinement by our first interpretations.

We do not get that second life. We do get another moment of attention in this one. What happened? What am I making it mean? Does that meaning help me meet what is here, or does it keep me one step away?
