Happiness Is Not a Goal

Happiness becomes elusive when we place it permanently after something else.

After the achievement.

After the relationship changes.

After the money arrives.

After the problem is solved.

Then happiness becomes a destination whose location moves whenever circumstances move.

That does not mean people can simply choose away depression, grief, trauma, illness, or difficult material conditions.

It means something narrower.

Preferred circumstances and the capacity for moments of happiness are not identical.

A good result can bring relief or pleasure.

An unwanted result can bring disappointment.

Neither proves that happiness must always wait for the world to match our preferences.

The source material, drawing on Werner Erhard, treats happiness less as an achievement and more as a stance from which life can be met.

That framing is useful when it is not turned into a command to feel good.

Happiness does not have to become another performance.

It can begin by questioning the assumption that life must first become different before any happiness is allowed.
