Friendship Can Be Offered, Not Claimed
We can decide to meet someone with goodwill before they have done anything to earn it. We can listen, make room, and offer time. The offer is ours to make.
Friendship involves another person. Saying 'I am your friend' can express an intention, but it cannot settle what the relationship is for them. They may welcome the offer, need more time, or want a different degree of closeness.
This does not make friendship a reward for performance. It makes the relationship mutual. Generosity is strongest when it does not demand that the other person receive it on our terms.
We can offer friendship freely and keep listening for the answer. What grows from that exchange belongs to both people.
