Chai as a Culinary Ritual, Not Just a Drink
The cookbook treats chai as a repeatable kitchen practice built from tea, milk, water, sweetener, and a spice mixture rather than as a one-off flavored beverage.
Its Masala Chai Mix combines toasted and ground cloves, black pepper, cardamom, nutmeg, cinnamon, and ginger. Milky Masala Chai then uses a small amount of that blend with black tea, milk, and water.
Because the spice mixture can be prepared ahead, chai becomes a household rhythm: measure, simmer, strain, sweeten if desired, and serve. The ritual comes from repetition and shared preparation more than complexity.
Ingredients
- Black tea
- Milk or soy milk
- Water
- Masala Chai Mix
- Optional sweetener
- A pot and strainer
Method
Prepare the spice mix in advance and store it airtight. For each pot, combine tea, water, milk, and a measured amount of spice, bring to a boil, reduce to a short simmer, then strain and sweeten if desired. Keep the method consistent and adjust strength gradually.
