Being Becomes Visible in Ordinary Work

Abstract qualities become believable in small actions.

Care sounds admirable until it has to remember a detail.

Responsibility sounds strong until something goes wrong.

Listening sounds generous until another person corrects our version of what happened.

Integrity sounds clear until keeping our word becomes inconvenient.

This is where a way of being stops being vocabulary and becomes conduct.

Being is not demonstrated by describing ourselves as reliable, loving, rigorous, open, or responsible.

Those qualities become visible in what we repeatedly do when nobody is asking for a philosophical explanation.

Do we find the missing information?

Do we correct the record when our account is wrong?

Do we make the call?

Do we notice what another person needs?

Do we finish the unglamorous part of the work?

This does not reduce being to a checklist of behaviors. The same behavior can arise from very different motives and contexts.

It does give us a practical test.

If a claimed way of being never changes the texture of ordinary action, what exactly is the claim pointing to?

Large ideas become trustworthy when they can survive small tasks.

Being becomes visible in the work.
