Being and Action Become Visible Together
We can distinguish being from action.
A person may intend generosity and still act carelessly.
A person may perform the correct behavior while relating to others with resentment.
The distinction helps.
Werner Erhard adds another: being and action are distinct yet inseparable, like the front and back of a hand.
The metaphor prevents the distinction from becoming a separation.
Being that never enters conduct is difficult to examine.
Action that is treated as detached from stance ignores the context from which the action is arising.
This does not mean we can infer a person's entire inner life from one behavior.
It means being becomes publicly consequential through action.
Commitment appears in what is done.
Listening appears in how a conversation is handled.
Responsibility appears in response.
Integrity appears in keeping or cleaning up the word.
Being and action can be distinguished for inquiry.
In lived life, they become visible together.
