A Place Can Be Part of Our Beginning
Returning to a place after many years can make time feel strangely uneven. The streets are present. So is the memory of the person who once lived or worked there. Neither is quite the place we left.
A formative place deserves gratitude. A skill learned there, a relationship, an opening in work, or a way of seeing may have shaped much that followed. But saying the place mattered is different from asking it to explain an entire life. The intervening years also belong to the story.
The useful question is not whether we can recover who we were. We cannot. It is what becomes visible when we meet the place again with the life we have since lived.
Some beginnings remain with us without requiring us to return to them. Gratitude can honor the place while leaving the future open.
